Jack Powers is a writer and retired teacher who is the author of two poetry collections, Everybody’s Vaguely Familiar and Still Love, as well as scores of other published poems, a growing number of short stories and a few essays. He is currently working on a collection of flash fiction.
He was the co-director of Writing Center and taught writing, English, special education and math at Joel Barlow High School for 38 years. He was a Coach for RULER Implementation at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligences.
Powers is now an educational consultant, a poetry workshop leader and an occasional college essay tutor.
Mr. Powers collects degrees in low-paying fields including a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University, an MS in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University, and an MFA in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College. He is certified in English, math and special education.
Mr. Powers is a Fellow of the Connecticut Writing Project – Fairfield and studied writing at Bard’s Institute of Writing and Thinking, Fairfield University, the Hudson Valley Writers Center, and in writing groups, including one that has met for over thirty-five years.
He is still trying to get it right. He writes poetry, personal essays, short stories and novels. In classes and workshops, he uses examples from published writers, as well as the work of former students and his own work to illustrate reusable ideas, forms, techniques to help writers generate and revise their pieces.
